Google’s June 2025 Core Algorithm Update

On 30th June 2025, Google confirmed the rollout of its latest broad core algorithm update, officially named the June 2025 Core Update. As with all core updates, the aim is to improve the relevance and quality of search results by refining how Google evaluates content across the web. This marks the second major core update of the year and has already made waves across a variety of sectors, from e-commerce to B2B services.

The update is officially completed as of 17th July. For businesses, digital marketers, and SEO professionals, core updates often come with fluctuations in rankings and visibility. Although we were hoping to see fluctuations in rankings, it doesn’t seem to have affected any of Red Ant client websites so far.

At Red Ant Solutions, we've reviewed the latest insights and industry responses to bring you a clear and concise breakdown of what changed, what it means for your site, and what actions you should take now.

What Is a Core Algorithm Update?

Core updates are broad changes to Google’s search algorithms and systems that affect how search results are ranked. Unlike smaller updates that target specific issues (such as spam or product reviews), core updates are more general and can impact a wide range of websites.

Google doesn’t typically provide specifics, but they do encourage website owners to focus on content quality, relevance, and user experience.

As stated by Google in their own guidance, "There’s nothing wrong with pages that may not perform as well after a core update. They haven’t violated our guidelines nor been subjected to a manual or algorithmic action, as can happen to pages that do violate those guidelines. In fact, there's nothing in a core update that targets specific pages or sites. Instead, the changes are about improving how our systems assess content overall. These changes may cause some pages that were previously under-rewarded to do better.”

What Changed in Google’s June 2025 Core Update?

Google has not disclosed any specific details about the updates released so far. However, here’s what we’ve gathered based on research from well-known and credible sources.

1. Introduction of MUVERA (Multi-Vector Retrieval Algorithm)

The Search Engine Journal reveals that a new retrieval system called MUVERA was deployed, replacing older methods, such as traditional keyword based and scoring based retrieval systems including, Lexical Matching of selecting results. It narrows the pool of pages and ranks based on deeper semantic relevance.

2. Higher value on experience in content

An expert in the industry seems to believe that Google now places even more emphasis on the “Experience” aspect of E-E-A-T, rewarding content that demonstrates first-hand knowledge and expertise.

3. Structured content favoured by AI overviews

Whilst other SEO expert service providers feel this update has brought content with clearly structured headers, lists, and FAQ sections is more likely to appear in AI Overview and featured snippets.

4. Low-value content penalised

Interestingly some industry experts have noticed this update has penalised their site when the content is too thin, spammy or poorly written AI generated content. They believe Google’s systems now better identify and reduce visibility for content lacking originality or usefulness.

5. Improved search intent matching

A well-known industry expert, Search Engine Roundtable has found this update to focus on search intent, they believe Google is more precise in aligning content with the user’s actual intent whether it is information, commercial or transactional, they believe pages that miss this mark may drop in ranking.

What should you do?

  • Focus on original, experience-based content
  • Use clear, structured formatting
  • Align closely with user intent
  • Avoid thin or low-effort content
  • Prepare for AI driven search evolution

The June 2025 Core Update underscores Google’s direction: prioritise helpful, expert content, strong technical performance, and user intent clarity. If you’ve felt ranking shifts, this update likely played a part.
